CHOIR

The Avenue Church Choir exists

  • to praise God through singing and to glorify Him in music,
  • to start the offering of worship with an appropriate introit,
  • to lead the congregation in the singing of hymns and songs in worship each Sunday,
  • to enhance the standard of singing and the meaningful interpretation of hymns and songs, so that everyone may offer to God the very best we can,
  • to sing anthems and songs which aim to enrich the offering of worship to God.

We rehearse at The Avenue Church on most Friday evenings from 7.30 to 8.30 pm, with extra practices leading up to Christmas and at Passiontide. At these important times in the year, we provide special musical services, augmenting our choir with singers from other churches in our circuit and from elsewhere.

The choir is affiliated to the Methodist Church Music Society, which invites its members to local singing workshops and events twice a year.

We are currently seeking new members:

Whereas we do need members who can come to most practices and join us for most Sunday services, we also welcome folk whose other commitments allow them to come only occasionally – e.g. you might be able to come only once a month, or only at a particular time in the year. All we ask is that you come when you can.

    Frequently asked Questions

    Is there an age limit?
No. We welcome singers of all ages.

Would I have to have an audition?
No. Just come along and see how you get on.

    Is there a membership fee?
No. Many years ago, the Choir was endowed with generous legacies. We are able to purchase music and meet all our expenses at no cost to our members.

Do I have to be a Church Member to belong to the choir?
No. Most of us are Church members, but we welcome anyone who would like to help us lead our church worship.

    Isn’t it all rather serious?
Obviously, we have our serious side, but we also have a lot of fun; laughter is common at our practices! We are in the choir because we enjoy singing and particularly enjoy singing for our Sunday services.

If you are interested in learning more about the choir, just come along to one of our practices, or contact the choir leader Ian Doddrell, or the secretary Ann Peers, via the Church Office.
